A future with coffee – developing a cooperative

In the coming years, we will be working with the “Menschen für Menschen” foundation and with the support of the Bavarian state government to develop a new coffee region in Ethiopia with small farms. The region is being established in the project area of Dano – around a four-hour drive south-west of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. The inhabitants of this plateau region live in very modest conditions, predominantly from farming and cattle breeding. The coffee there grows at altitudes of 1,500 to 2,500 metres, and up to now has been produced exclusively for the local market.

By building a washing station and a dry mill, we are advancing coffee cultivation in the area even further and are working together to develop a sustainable coffee cooperative. This is helping us to lay the foundations for long-term improvements to living conditions, giving people the opportunity to build a better life for themselves. Overall, more than 1,250 farmers stand to benefit, while around 50 young people without work are expected to find employment.

Creating new prospects – a school for 1,000 children

Six out of ten children in Ethiopia aren’t able to go to a school that is appropriate for their age. Around 43% of men and 59% of women are illiterate. However, education is the key to fighting poverty and boosts people’s prospects for the future. That’s why in 2018, we began work on a further aid programme with the “Menschen für Menschen” foundation: to build the new Kekero Jibat Higher Primary School in the region of Dano, where the coffee cooperative is also currently being developed. Thanks to the construction of the school, which includes the provision of all equipment such as furniture, school materials and books, around 1,000 children aged 7 to 16 are taking the first steps towards a better future.

The school was completed in the summer of 2020 after two years of construction. It consists of three new classroom blocks, an administrative building with a reading room, and two buildings with sanitary facilities. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, children weren’t able to attend lessons at the new school until spring 2021.

Here’s how the school grew, step by step – from 2018 to 2021

Raising hope. More than 54 million
tree seedlings have been planted.

Together, we are helping to tackle the root of a major problem in Ethiopia – the threat of desertification. Today, only 13% of the East African country’s land area is covered by forests. The reasons for this are complex and include overgrazing, deforestation, population growth and climate change. These cause large tracts of fertile land to be washed away or the soil to silt up. That’s why we support the “Menschen für Menschen” foundation’s reforestation programme and donate several thousand tree seedlings every year.

To date, these donations have added up to more than 54 million tree seedlings. The trees that grow from the seedlings planted in the foundation’s tree nurseries improve the quality of the soil. Reforestation prevents soil erosion, which in turn helps to secure the livelihoods of local farmers and their families. Fruit trees are of particular interest, as their fruit can also be sold on the market.

The source of life – clean drinking water

Around half of the people in Ethiopia have no access to clean drinking water. We have funded the construction of wells through the sale of Ethiopian coffee during sustainability promotions together with our trading partners. These wells not only improve the health of Ethiopians, but also enhance their quality of life. For example, the strenuous and dangerous task of fetching water from far-away sources – a job traditionally carried out by women – is no longer necessary. This means that girls in particular have time to go to school.
